IT`S NEVER LATE TO CONTEMPLATE
AND
STUDY THE VALUES OF SHASTRAS

(TWAM त्वम्)
Introduction:
The Geeta is a Shastra. The masters of Vedanta, in general, and my teacher (Swamy Chainmayananda ji) in particular, advised to contemplate upon the contents of the Shastras regularly, even if the ideas and the ideals are considered fully assimilated. शास्त्रं सुचिंतितमपि प्रति चिन्तनीयं. A Some prominent ideas, in the set of first six chapters of the Scripture (Holy Gita), as explained by the Gurus, are selected and being placed here  to chew upon for the sake of Swadhyay (reading, rereading and intense contemplation) and Abhyasa (regular practice of the ideals at all the three levels of personality). The title to this selection is the second word in the Vedic Great Commandment “Tat-Twam-Asi”, (available in Chhandogya Upanishad in the Sama Veda), the significance of which, according to some scholars, is comprehensively elaborated by the Lord in the first six chapters of the Geeta. “Twam” is the Consciousness or the pure Self which is the subjective Core of one’s personality lying beyond the five layers of matter.

The three levels of personality are:-

1.     Physical Personality
2.     Emotional Personality
3.     Intellectual Personality.

These personalities are known as matter envelopment. There is a fourth personality also, i.e. Spiritual Personality. That is the soul or the spirit in us and therefore not applicable to Swadhyay or Abhyasa.

Five Laayers are the five sheaths (कोश ), i.e. the gross extensions/coverings of the spirit. They are:-

1.    Food Sheath ( अन्नमय कोश)
२.    Vital Air Sheath ( प्राणमय कोश)
३.    Mental Sheath ( मनोमय कोश)
४.    Intellectual Sheath ( विज्ञानमय कोश)
५.    Bliss Sheath ( आनंदमय कोश)
